Yoga Apprenticeship Program & Therapeutic Yoga

Updated 03/24/10

The Center for Yoga of Seattle's Apprenticeship Program is designed to train the next generation of yoga teachers in the great tradition of Yogacharya B. K. S. Iyengar. Periodically, we accept as apprentices a limited number of dedicated students committed to becoming competent yoga teachers. The Center is now seeking highly motivated students to start in the Apprenticeship Program in January 2009.

Apprenticeships in Iyengar Yoga involve learning how to assist in regular classes, learning the progression in teaching beginners (how to develop a yoga course), learning how to individualize the practice and teaching of yoga to various individuals, learning the seven-step method of teaching Iyengar Yoga, and learning how to develop good demonstration, instruction, observation, and correction skills. Apprenticeships run for a period of two years, with enrollment in a 13-week quarterly session, after which the apprenticeship position will either be extended or not, depending on the performance and advancements of the apprentice.

The Center for Yoga of Seattle offers one of only 29 approved Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training Programs in the United States. Richard is the only authorized Iyengar Yoga Teacher Trainer in the Seattle Area. For a detailed biography of Richard Schachtel, the Center's founder & director, click here.

SEMI-PRIVATE YOGA THERAPEUTICS CLASSES

with Richard Schachtel

An Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics Class is an opportunity for those with various injuries, ailments and imbalances to learn highly specialized and individualized therapeutic yoga sequences to help improve thier condition. For students with back, knee shoulder, or neck problems; organic or nervous system ailments; hypertension or low energy issues.

The Center for Yoga of Seattle's semi-private therapeutic Iyengar yoga class taught by Richard Schachtel will resume in September, 2010.

This is a unique class at The Center where students with injuries, imbalances, major stiffness, and medical challenges can gain more individualized instruction than is possible in a regular group lesson. In this Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics Class each student will be given an individualized yoga program which will adjusted week by week.

Richard's permission to attend is required.

Those who have taken a class with Richard in the last 12 months can call or email a request to join the class along with a description of their major problems as it related to doing yoga. For those who have not been recent students of Richard's, a private lesson with him is required where he can work with you individually to design a suitable yoga regime and to determine your suitability to join the Friday class. Private lessons are prepaid and are arranged through the yoga center office.

Those with permission to join the Friday class need to register through the yoga center office. Those taking their first therapeutics will pre-pay for a single lesson. Those who have been in the course before will need to sign up all for the 3,4,or 5 Fridays of the month in advance through the office.

Richard trains for 1-2 months a year with Geeta and BKS Iyengar and their students in their medical yoga classes in Poona, India. Richard works with a wide variety of student challenges: back, neck, knee shoulder, wrist problems and organic ailments and system imbalances. This is the only class of this nature in Seattle (an Iyengar yoga Therapeutics class)
